James Stonehouse showed an interest for music at an early age. He began playing trumpet, guitar and piano in elementary school. Clearly, music was his favorite subject. Composing his first song at just 10 years old, his love for music inspired him to continue writing.
During the next few years James fell in love with music for theater and film and developed an interest in the structure of long form compositions. At fifteen James began to write his own original works for Orchestra. His inspiration for film music came from Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Thomas Pasatieri and Danny Elfman. James also enjoyed the work of Michael Kamen, Thomas Newman and Mark Snow.
At the early age of 16, James began playing piano at local establishments around metro Detroit, sneaking into bars and clubs to perform. At 17 he was commissioned to write and score a theme song for a local television program...and since then, he's never looked back.
Stonehouse attended Boston's Berklee College of Music where he studied Film Scoring and Composition. At the same time he also continued his professional career writing and arranging music for Fool’s Gold (a Michigan recording company) and other independent artists.
James other musical influences include; The Beatles, Paul Simon, Andrew Loyd Webber, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Leonard Bernstein, Mahler, Beethoven, Mozart and Debussy
In total, Stonehouse has written over 1,000 compositions including pop, rock and inspirational songs, as well as musical scores for Public Service Announcements, and a theme song for his high school graduating class.
He has also composed for televisions, documentaries, commercials, narrative film, movie trailers, stage shows, musicals, ballets and arranged music for every kind of artist from rappers to country-western singers.
James recently completed work writing and performing the scores for several independent films and documentaries including the 2012 full length documentary “Honor Flight Michigan – The Legacy," and the television special "EXTRAORDINARY: Stories about Solanus Casey for Children."
